Why choose custom photography?
Each experience with Kaitlyn Karssen Photography is fully custom to each client, depending on their wants and needs. The goal of every session is to capture and create beautiful, artistic images that will become heirloom art designed for your home or barn. Your experience and your art will be completely unique to you.
Why choose a photographer that focuses on printing?
In a crazy digital world, I firmly believe in printing. It is the only way to attempt and preserve a memory, forever.
Even if you’re running low on wall space, printing can still play an important role in archiving your images. The physics of how light bounces off a piece of paper and into your eyes is not going to change, but the way a computer reads an image file does change. For example, optical disks like DVDs used to be the gold standard of photo backup, but now they’ve all but vanished.
My archival quality prints can last hundreds of years, but at the end of the day, it’s about your art.
Seeing a high quality print of an image of your horse can be mesmerizing. There is just something about holding a finished print in your hands that is infinitely more satisfying than seeing your photo on a screen — especially a pocket-sized one. It also serves as a tangible, permanent product of your equine, a monument to the time and effort and everything that goes into the animal and the sport.
Before Your Session
+ What should I expect?
With Kaitlyn Karssen Photography, I want you to have the best experience possible. I aim to make your session fun and lighthearted with lots of laughter in a relaxed environment. I like to get to know my clients and their horses so I can capture their true personalities. While you will get some common posed shots, I aim to photograph you and your horses as you really are so I take a more laid back approach. What should you expect? Fun! As cliche as it might sound, photoshoots are always a great time. I pride myself on my ability to work with horses and be super patient, I'll take as long as the horse needs to get "the shot." Everyone around ends up laughing and having a good time.
+ When should I book?
The sooner the better! To ensure quality, service, and uniqueness, I refuse to overbook. Many clients book weeks to months ahead of time to guarantee a spot.
+ What is needed at the time of booking?
The creative fee is required at the time of booking to guarantee booking and reservation of your spot. A simple contract stating what is and isn't included in the shoot must also be signed and returned electronically at the time of booking. The creative fee is transferable but nonrefundable.
Day of Your Session
+ When and where will my shoot be?
For equestrian lifestyle shoots, it's entirely up to you! I'm confident in making beautiful images no matter the location and scenery. Most people do them on their barn property, but some do them in locations such as the Kentucky Horse Park or the Bridle Path in Grand Prix Village. I only do these shoots during golden hour, which is why availability is extremely limited. For equine portraiture shoots, I use backdrops and studio lights. Adequete room and appropriate lighting for my set up is important, but a majority of barns can accomodate this.
+ Will my horse be scared of the backdrop and studio lights?
More than likely, no! I give the horses plenty of time to check out the set up and I never force them to remain in a situation they aren't comfortable in. By allowing them to realize it's no big deal, they settle in in minutes. As for the studio lights, they're so quick the horses don't even realize they go off.
+ How should my horse be prepared?
I always tell clients to groom how they would for a show. These photos are an investment, so you'll want your horse to look as good as it can. Photoshop can only do so much! Make sure your horse is well groomed, braid or plait, polish the hooves, and have a clean bridle with a simple bit.
+ What if the weather is bad?
Overcast is no issue for photoshoots, it can actually be quite favorable. If it is raining or exceptionally windy, photoshoots can be rescheduled for another day.
+ What should I wear for my lifestyle shoot?
Whatever you want! I want you to be happy and comfortable. Please feel free to plan for outfit changes for a variety of photos.
After Your Session
+ When will my images be ready?
Although most clients' images are finished within days, please allow up to 4 weeks for your photos to be completed.
+ How do I see my images?
In-person with me during an image reveal! Once I notify you that your images are ready, you can sceduale a viewing appointment. Appointments are done at my home office where I have several samples of the products I offer. This image reveal is your only chance to order artwork and prints, so do be prepared.
+ How long will it take my artwork, prints, and albums to arrive?
Turnaround for artwork, prints, and albums is very quick! It usually takes around a week for prints to show up at your door. Large scale artwork will understandably need a little bit longer to be completed.
+ What about digital images?
For equestrian lifestyle shoots, you will leave the image reveal session with a downloadable gallery that is available for 7 days. These images are web resolution only and are not for printing, and prints should have already been ordered during the image reveal.
Although I don't give out a gallery of your images for equine portraiture shoots, any image that you buy a print of will be available to download as a social media/web resolution digital file. Didn't buy a print of the image but still want a digital copy? No worries! You can purchase digital copies separately as well. These digital copies will be uploaded into an password protected online gallery where they can be downloaded.
+ Can I share my digital images on social media?
Of course! After you buy prints, you're more than welcome to share the digital images you receive on social media. Credit to the Kaitlyn Karssen Photography social media accounts is always appreciated and the images are not to be altered in any way via filters, cropping, etc.
